Exploratory Laboratory 1

Exploratory Laboratory is investigating the earth science and coastal processes revealed along the Jurassic Coast through the imaginative insight of visual artists. A series of artists' research residencies will lead to the creation of new temporary artworks developed in response to places and communities. These will be shown in buildings, galleries and the open air along the Dorset and East Devon coast path in 2012.

At the heart of the project is collaboration between earth scientists and artists to explore the unique geology of the coast and arrive at new ways of seeing and understanding it. The project will inspire artists and engage the public in the coast's past, present and future, both locally and globally.

The project starts in Autumn 2010 with an exhibition showing the methods and technology being used to monitor and manage the Jurassic Coast alongside works by artists who are exploring these and similar techniques. A programme of demonstrations, talks and hands-on workshops offer opportunities to find out more, and a symposium brings together artists and earth scientists to kickstart collaborations between them.

Exploratory Laboratory is a Creative Coast Project. The Creative Coast team aims to make the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site in Dorset and East Devon the most creative coast in the world.
